The Neuroscience of Weight Loss: Overeaters have a different type of brain than thin people, one that gets more excitement and pleasure whenever it sees, smells, or tastes food, and thus we tend to overeat.  Being overweight also disrupts the brain’s ability to judge how much food has been taken in, nor can it recognize neurochemical cues of hunger or fullness.  Blaming yourself doesn't work, and self-criticism drives the brain to seek more reward stimuli (i.e., more fat, sugar, and carbohydrates).  Our brainscan research at the University of Pennsylvania has demonstrated that meditation, mindfulness, and  relaxation exercises will satisfy the reward centers of the brain, and will even reduce the anxiety and depression so often associated with ineffective weight-loss strategies.  In recognition of this problem, the National Institutes of Health have given nearly two million dollars in grants to help Jean Kristeller at Indiana State University to assist in the development of  mindful eating programs throughout the United States.  Mindful eating is a core element to this weight loss program, and  Jean, Andy Newberg, and Mark Waldman are now conducting the first brain-scan study to document the effectiveness of this new approach to eating, dieting, and losing weight.  You'll feel more satisfied, satiated, and calm as you slowly lose weight and keep it off for life.

Meditation and Mindfulness Exercises: This class is one of only a handful of university-developed weight-loss programs in that uses meditation, relaxation, and mindful eating strategies within the context of a proven weight-loss strategy. Each class includes exercises that specifically focus on eating patterns, body self-image, weight acceptance, and a deep commitment to changing one’s relationship to food. In addition, the mindfulness exercises have a 30-year documented history of helping you lower blood pressure and reduce undue stress, thus guiding you toward greater peace and serenity in virtually every aspect of life.

Personal Choice and Control: Each class member is given a wide selection of research-documented tools to create his or her own personal weight-loss plan. Thus, you can apply this program to any diet plan you choose.  This "free choice" approach has been shown to be the most effective way to lose weight.  Indeed, our preliminary research data shows that our Mindful Eating / Commitment Therapy program is more effective than any other commerical weight-loss program in the country.  Be it with Weight Watcher's, Atkins, or programs that supply you with portioned food, nearly every participant regains some or most of the weight he or she had lost, and in less than one year's time.  Our program, however, will give you the tools you'll  need to stop you from regaining those hard-earned pounds.

Personal  Information:  In order to take control of your food and diet decisions, you need to have the facts.  This class gives  participants the latest scientific findings to help anyone lose weight wisely, safely, and enjoyably. This class will expose the many myths promoted by different weight loss programs, health-food advocates, and the vast majority of diet books. Students will receive copies listing the university studies that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, and will be taught how to analyze the research to make an informed decision.

Personalized and medically supervised weight loss programs (with Susan VanVonderen, RN CNP, and Mark Waldman) are now available. These 5-session programs include all necessary tests and monitoring to insure safe weight loss in a safe, warm, and confidential environment.  Call Mark and Susan's office for more information: 805-907-1181, and visit Susan's website at www.SusanVanVonderen.net.

ESALEN WEEKEND:  AUG 20-22, 2010

www.Esalen.org

Compassionate Communication:

The

Neuroscientific Way
to Foster Intimacy, Happiness, and Success

With Mark Robert Waldman

Associate Fellow, Center for Spirituality and the Mind, University of Pennsylvania

Adjunct Faculty, Loyola Marymount University

Based on their university brainscan research, Mark Waldman and Andrew Newberg, MD, have developed a tested simple strategy to transform, in less than 12 minutes, an ordinary conversation into an extraordinary event – one that rapidly generates empathy and cooperation with anyone: family, friends, lovers, spouses, business associates, even strangers.  By consciously changing your facial expression, body language, and voice style,  you create a unique state of neural resonance that increases calmness and comprehension in both the speaker’s the listener’s body and brain. The technique also suppresses neural activity that generates anxiety, irritability, and defensive posturing while enhancing memory cognition, and social awareness.

Compassionate Communication incorporates the key elements of meditation, stress reduction, and relaxation therapy, and is now taught to doctors, nurses, and caregivers to establish deeper empathy with patients.  Corporate executives have been trained to use these strategies to enhance collaborative teamwork, and it is being used by therapists, attorneys, and mediators to eliminate marital conflict and negotiate fair settlements between opposing individuals and groups.  Parents can easily use these techniques with children, and with the self-training CDs that participants receive, one can easily teach Compassionate Communication to individuals and groups: in schools, churches, or workshop situations.

Throughout this weekend, attendees will immerse themselves in a variety of playful dialogues and meditations designed to enhance the neural circuits of compassion. Brainscan slides and videos will be presented to document this unique multi-university project. Additional conflict-transformation materials are included.

MARK WALDMAN’s research has been featured in Time, Newsweek, USA Today, the Washington Post, Oprah Radio and Magazine, and PBS television.

He is the author of ten books, including How God Changes Your Brain.

The Power of Yes

Saturday, August 22nd: 2:30-4 pm (followed by book signing)

In the "POWER OF YES" presentation on Saturday, Mark will present the most recent brainscan evidence documenting how positive words reduce anxiety, depression and stress, and how a single negative word, seen for less than one second, causes the brain to release destructive neurochemicals that can permananently damage the brain. He'll explain why the brain is designed to pay more attention to negative thoughts, and why it is so essential to train your frontal lobes to be consistently positive in order to accomplish any task or goal you desire to achieve.

Spiritual Medicine: Healing Inner Wounds and Developing Inner Peace

Using Mindfulness, Acceptance, and Compassion

Meditation is simple to learn, and the benefits are well documented, but spending a day in deep contemplative practice can be one of the most transforming experiences in a person's life. This workshop will guide participants through new and traditional meditations drawn from the world’s spiritual traditions, practices that have been proven to transform the neural functioning of the brain. Whether we are breathing deeply or relaxing, talking or eating, or doing any activity around the house, we can imbue our daily experiences with mindfulness and self-love, and when we do so, we improve the cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of the brain. The workshop includes a mindful-eating lunch, plus new strategies for dialoguing compassionately with others.  An interactive slide presentation will show you how different spiritual practices affect the psychological functioning of your brain.

The Power of Yes: Spirituality and the Neuroscience of Positive Thinking

Sunday, August 9, 2009     Noon– 3:30 pm:  $25

Combining Contemplative Practice and Cognitive Strategies to change your brain, reach your goals, and deepen your innermost values.

This workshop will begin with a mindful-eating lunch meditation. Then we will practice specific techniques that have been shown to help an individual to deeply integrate their personal values into his or her daily life. And when these strategies are embedded into mindfulness, meditation, and prayer, our research at the University of Pennsylvania have documented how these positive, optimistic, and affirmative ways of thinking profoundly alter key structures in the human brain.

Upcoming Seminar: 2010

California Lutheran University

Writing Non-Fiction Books for the General Public

A Seminar for Faculty Members, Teachers, and Students

Academic writing is essential for publishing journal articles and books for researchers and professionals, but authoring a book for the general public requires a radically different writing style, along with a solid understanding of how the New York book-publishing world operates.  For those who are willing to make the transition, it is possible to garner large advances and national exposure to the media.  In fact, for the past five years, New York publishers and literary agents are specifically interested in books written by university-affiliated professors who are engaged in cutting-edge research in the sciences, humanities, and the arts. In this three-hour seminar, Mark Waldman will teach the fundamentals for obtaining a book contract from a major publishing house. Specific attention will be given to the following areas:

New York publishing houses versus the smaller presses

Editors, publishers, and literary agents: What really makes them tick?

Book proposals: The most important writing you will ever do

First paragraphs: Why they need to be creative, provocative, and simple

Writing styles: Do you really need to “speak” to the level of an 8th Grader?  Not necessarily.

Book doctors, writer’s conferences, and editorial consultants: Are they worth the money?

The pluses and minuses of co-authorship

Advances, royalties, and contracts

Do agents and editors have the right to changer major parts of your book?  Yes.

Publicity: Using your academic publishing and conference lectures to sell your book idea

Promotion: Websites, YouTube, CDs, DVDs, and seminars
